Swollen Feet
Like most gout sufferers, it all started in my big toe. I remember it like yesterday. My wife and I decided to take the train from Illinois to Oregon to see our daughter receive her master’s degree. This was a two day trip on the train but we didn’t mind because we’d get to see the sites and meet new people along the way. As night fall began on the first day of our trip, I started to feel as though my big toe was on fire. I thought maybe I had hit it on something so I took some ibuprofen put my foot up and dozed off to sleep.
It wasn’t very long that I had fallen asleep before I was awakened by a shooting pain that seemed to follow through my body. I was about 3:00am at the time and as I removed the blanket that my wife had covered me with, I saw a swollen big red toe.
There was no explanation as to why my big toe was swollen, there was no evidence of any bits or previous injuries. Just a swollen throbbing with pain big red toe.
I had another day of travel as I took ibuprofen every four hours and kept my foot elevated until I arrived in Portland. I had phoned my daughter and explained my situation and asked her to make me an appointment at the VA hospital so I could find out what the problem was.
My wife and I arrived in Portland the following day and she had scheduled me an appointment as I had requested. By the time I got off the train I was in excruitiating pain I needed the help of my son-in-law just to get the car.

When I arrived at the VA clinic, the doctor immediately diagnosed my problem as Gout. I asked him what is gout? He began to explain what gout was and told me he could prescribe some medication that would help.
Imagine my surprise about the diagnosis as I always thought Gout was some mystical ailment that old people had made up. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined myself with gout.
